Today we took a marathon trip to Hana, which is on the eastern shore of Maui. We went with a small tour bus of 12 people. Maui is basically two intersecting circles that vaguely resemble a face and a body. Lahaina, where we are staying, is in the forehead, and Hana is in the back. The trip was 12 hours long, with breakfast and lunch provided. We left at 6:30 am and returned after 6 pm, exhilarated and exhausted. The Road to Hana, as it is called, is one of the prettiest drives on the planet. It takes you through rainforests, deserts, unusual beaches with black and red sand, and undeveloped cowboy country where cattle are raised. We even stopped at a winery and tried pineapple wine. You go over roads that are unpaved, or even worse, paved by adding millions of patches to old pavement! As you will see, the sun came and went throughout the day, as did the rain. Here are our pictures with a little annotation.

Even the 'straight roads' are windy. Our tour guide said that George Harrison lived in this part of Maui and Paul McCartney got the idea of writing "The Long and Winding Road" from here.
